Sony Scenic Arts
Los Angeles, CA
The Scenic Arts project at Sony Pictures Studios expands on an existing building that was built in the 1930s. The new building’s façade is composed of large, GFRC panels, fabricated by Unlimited Designs. These GFRC panels require a variety of different components—framing components, mold parts, rebar connecting the frame and the finish—which need to be coordinated with each other.
Process
STUD-IO developed an automated process to generate digital fabrication information for all components of the building’s GFRC panels, including both the panel frames and parts for the GFRC mold and finishing process. For the GFRC mold components, STUD-IO utilized automated workflows previously developed with Unlimited Designs to generate the 5-axis CNC information for the mold parts. Combined with panel frames that were generated with STUD-IO’s StudFinder and BarBender software, the reusable and fully automated process produces highly accurate GFRC products.
